It’s been a hot minute since I’ve reviewed a book (probably because my last read took me bloody ages!) but I’m back reviewing ‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Human Kind’.
Gave us power
Made us hungry for more
Gave us purpose
Made us deadly
This is the thrilling account of our extraordinary history- from insignificant apes to rulers of the world.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that this book really isn’t for everyone. It’s got a lot of history, a lot of big words (that I wouldn’t be able to pronounce if my life depended on it) and some pretty lengthy chapters. With all that being said, I did actually find it really interesting!
This book is literally about how we have evolved to become the people we are today and what has changed since the dinosaurs walked the face of the earth. It’s fascinating to see where exactly we came from and what factors shaped the world we live in today. It talks about global warming (a very real and serious issue for us at the mo), capitalism, religion, ethnicity… the list goes on but those are to name a few topics addressed in the book.
I have a habit of scrolling through Amazon and adding books to my basket that pique my interest, and this was one of them. Funnily enough, about a week after I had done that I was in a heated debate with my Daddy and he said I should read this book and see if it changes my mind on some things (for example, my choice of being a veggie). Upon reading the book I can confirm that slaughtering animals is unnecessary for our survival and eating their flesh is just gross, just as I had previously thought.
Okay so reviewy time! I would give the book a solid 3.5 outta 5 stars. It was interesting to read but a bit too ‘heavy’ for me. If you’re a history hoe then you’ll probably really enjoy it, I’m not, so it wasn’t really my cuppa tea. I will admit to falling asleep on 4 separate occasions while reading the book (although this could be due to the fact that I read late at night) and I will also confess that I made a solid 75% of the words I couldn’t pronounce up.
Buuuuuuut!!! I do stand by the fact that this book is interesting and educational, I just don’t think it’s up everyone’s street.
Okay so that concludes another one of Ciara’s Shitty Book Reviews! I’ve actually got tucked back into reading some stand-alone fictions which hopefully won’t put me to sleep, so I’m sure there will be a few more ‘Shitty Reviews’ to come! Can’t wait!
What books have you been loving recently? I love finding new ones to add to my already too long TBR pile!
Until next time…
